چکیده

-Cats were raised with one eye sutured and the other removed. We wished to determine whether: ( 1) the deprived eye would develop a visual field of normal extent (135’) as might be expected on the basis of the competitive advantage that this eye enjoys within the geniculocortical pathways. or (2) the deprived eye, in the absence of pattern vision, would develop only 90’ of vision. as happens in binocularly deprived cats. In these experiments the deprived eye developed only 90” of vision. This ma) represent a failure of normal geniculo-cortical development. a failure probably due to lack of a spatially patterned visual environment.

Behavioral, electrophysiological and morphological studies of binocular competition in the development of the geniculo-cortical pathways of cats.

Cats were raised with one eye sutured and with a lesion in the retina of the other eye. In these cats the competitive interaction between the pathways that go to the cortex from each eye was tested by studying the behavioral capacities, the electrophysiological responses and the morphological appearance of the geniculo-cortical pathways. Two parts of the visual system in which no binocular comp...

Evidence that binocular competition affects the postnatal development of Y-cells in the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus.

Cats reared from birth with the lids of one eye sutured develop abnormalities of their geniculo-cortical systems: geniculate neurons in layers that are deprived of visual input grow less than those receiving visual inputs from the normal eye4,1°; the percentage of recordable geniculate cells that are Y-cells is greatly reduced in the deprived layers9; cortical neurons lose most of their input f...

A survey of feline behavioral problems in Tehran

Behavioral problems in cats have drawn more attention in recent years since they affect the cat-owner relationship. This study was designed to study the rate of cats with undesirable behaviors according to their owners. Frequency of behavioral problems in 167 cats attending Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tehran, was evaluated using a questionnaire. Accordin...

Binocular interaction on cells of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of visually deprived cats.

Early visual deprivation produces profound abnormalities in the mammalian visual system 9. In the cat, the period of susceptibility to such deprivation is limited to the second and third postnatal months s. In an attempt to find which neural regions were most susceptible to early deprivation, Wiesel and Hubel compared receptive field properties of single visual neurons in visually deprived cats...

The functional significance of X and Y cells in normal and visually deprived cats

The so-called X cells in the retino-geniculostriate pathway have been suggested to be important in the analysis o f spatial patterns in the visual scene, whereas Y cells have been considered responsible for detecting temporal change. In this article Murray Sherman suggests that this is too simplistic a way o f differentiating these cells, and that a more appropriate differentiation can be drawn...
